Is Your Family Affected By Domestic Violence?

In Maryland, the law defines domestic violence as an abusive act between family members, household members or an act of sexual assault. It can take many forms beyond physical assault. It can include threats, stalking, revenge porn and false imprisonment. If you are a victim of domestic violence, the family law attorneys at the Law Offices of Dawn S. Veltman, LLC, can help you find safety and apply for a protective order. If you were accused of domestic violence or are contesting a protective order, we have the skills to assist you, as well.

What Is A Protective Order?

With a protective order, a court can order one person to stay away from another and may include restrictions against contacting the person through text, phone or email, as well. Some people refer to these as restraining orders or orders of protection. Relationships that qualify for a protective order include:

  • Marriage, separation or divorce
  • Have a child together
  • Related by blood, marriage or adoption
  • Had a sexual relationship in the past year
  • Lived together in a sexual relationship for at least 90 days in the past year
  • Raped or sexually assaulted by the person in the past six months
  • Petitioner is a vulnerable adult

If your relationship does not fit any of these definitions, you may still be eligible for a peace order in Maryland. We are happy to discuss the best approach for your family law situation.
