Recent truck accident causes several injuries

On Behalf of | Sep 22, 2022 | Personal Injury

Tractor-trailers and other large trucks are frequently seen on Maryland’s busy roads and highways. Like any other driver, the operators of these vehicles have a duty to drive safely and reasonably.

A recent accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer shut down I-95 for several hours and injured six people. The accident occurred near the Baltimore and Hartford County lines. The six injured victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the accident was unknown

Although the cause of the accident was not determined, there are many things that can cause truck accidents. Since trucks are usually the largest vehicles on the road, the likelihood of victims suffering serious injuries significantly increases.

Some common causes of truck accidents include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Fatigue
  • Speeding

Truck drivers are susceptible to distractions just like any other driver. Actions such as looking at their phone, eating, talking or fiddling with their dashboard equipment can cause them to become distracted.

Working as a truck driver typically involves grueling schedules with tight deadlines. Truck drivers may even skip required meal or break periods if they are running behind schedule.

This means many drivers could be driving while exhausted or sleepy. They focus less or have a slower reaction time, increasing the risk of an accident.

The deadlines and rigid schedules can also cause truck drivers to speed, especially to make up time if they were slowed down by traffic. Any collision with a large truck is likely to cause injuries, but a speeding truck that smashes into another vehicle only makes the risk of a catastrophic injury higher.

The consequences of a truck accident are serious

If you are injured in a truck accident, you may face a challenging road ahead. Focusing on healing from your injuries can be difficult if you are dealing with high medical bills or having to miss work.

You might also experience mental or emotional distress or be afraid to drive again. Truck drivers who fail to drive reasonably and cause an accident are acting negligently.

You could receive compensation for your damages through a personal injury action. Personal injury attorneys can help you with pursuing a negligence claim.
